In 2004, my Dad was standing in his kitchen talking on the phone, when he fell to the floor. He had suffered a rupture of an aneurysm in his aortic artery, the death rate of which is 90%. He survived, and lived another 20 years but continued to have chronic health problems because he did not change his lifestyle habits or mindset. Almost everyone on both sides of my family has heart disease. This family history alone increases my risk...and your family's health history and genetics play a role in shaping your overall health.
However, our daily lifestyle choices significantly shape our risk of illness and disease.
I have been a nurse for 35 years, most of my clinical experience has been in chronic disease management and care. I have educated and cared for many patients, some of which have transformed, managed or reversed their diseases. However, the majority did not. Simply because they did not change their mindset towards healthy living.
Jump ahead a few years to a time when I was under an enormous amount of emotional stress. On a seemingly normal day, while I was driving my car, I suddenly began to have excruciating pain in my chest and tingling in my jaw. It took my breath away! But I had enough awareness to pull my car off the road. In that moment I thought for sure I was having a heart attack. Then, as fast as it appeared, it went away. I took a deep breath and did something I should not have done, I drove myself to the nearby hospital. What I experienced was not a heart attack, it was anxiety and a panic attack brought on by emotional stress.
Those few seconds forced me to seriously evaluate my life, especially my physical and mental health. I began to make changes, but it was not easy; I faced continuous challenges and obstacles.
So, I decided to educate myself more about lifestyle choices and transformation.
One day, soon after that event, I was at a friend’s house and noticed a book on the kitchen table, “The Power of Now" by Eckhart Tolle. My friend saw me pick it up and said, "that’s a book about self-reflection and being in the present moment." In my heart, at that moment, I felt those words and truly realized the importance of emotional health, and the value of time.
How much time do we have?
A long life is undoubtedly desirable, but is it not equally important to consider the quality of our health within those years, days, and moments?
My experience and challenges in taking care of my physical and emotional health allowed me to create a pathway to healthy living that has changed my life, and the lives of others.
